Artist's Statement

The bold tonal contrasts in my piece are representative of the uncertainty, random variance, and ambiguity associated with the patient's rare case of myofibromatosis. The warm, fiery colors chosen imply the patient's feelings of uncertainty about the risk of additional illness. Each of the fifteen identical white masks stands for an individual year of the girl's life, two of which are plagued with an artistic interpretation of a tumor. The stark textural and chromatic comparisons in my project are indicative of the very technical, medical nature of the condition, but the realistic faces included demonstrate the humanity of the patient.
