Artist's Statement

My project was inspired by Matt Mitcheltree's study of Quality Improvement in Pediatric Gastric Emptying Scintigraphy. Because this study researched infants with gastric emptying problems, I used stomach and bottle prints in an order that seems to empty diagonally downwards. The colors blue and pink represent the infantile age of the patients studied, and white represents milk, one of the liquids tested. The dots on the stomach prints symbolize the radioactive isotope 99mTc-DTPA used in Matt's study to record results. The pink ribbon represents the comforting notion that a better form of this scintigraphy process was developed for the comfort of babies. This comfort parallels the safety a baby feels when holding its favorite blankie or stuffed animal.
