John Hay Educational Partnership
Milestones
- 1989 The Cleveland Clinic Foundation and John Hay High School entered into an educational partnership.
- 1990 sponsoring speakers & guest lecturers, classroom demonstrations, field trips, on site observations, shadowing opportunities, mentoring relationships for students.
- 1990 classroom-based educational programs and experiences offered to the entire student body, faculty and staff of John Hay High School.
- 1992 Start of preceptorships (for 11th graders).
- 1992 Teacher grants established to augment education programs within the classroom and throughout the school.
- 1993 Start of advisorships (for 12th graders) and limited independent study opportunities for selected honors students.
- 1995 Algebra I is taught in a computerized lab designed to allow each student in the class to progress through the course, generate individualized assignments, and complete lessons at his or her own pace. Lab students consistently earn higher grades, achieve better attendance, and pass math proficiency exams in larger numbers than Algebra students in traditional classrooms, both at John Hay and throughout the District.
- 1996 Publication of “Beauty In Youth and Age”: an Intergenerational writing project with John Hay students and Cleveland OASIS members. The book was included in the City of Cleveland’s tricentennial time capsule.
- 1998 The Partnership participated in the FIRST project and its robotics competition.
- 1998 The Partnership was one of two educational initiatives selected from over 800 across the country for the WGBH-TV (Boston PBS station) program “Learning That Works.”
- 1999 The Medical Office Assistant Program, the Biomedical Engineering Program, and expanded School to Work options in the Business Co op Program and the Special Education Program were introduced.
- 1999 The Howard Hughes Medical Institute Foundation awarded the Partnership funding in the amount of $425,000 over a four-year period so that the Cleveland Clinic and John Hay High School could expand upon their successful work of improving science literacy among students in urban schools.
- 2000 Two separate summer science curriculums, Physics in Medicine and Human Physiology in Space, were developed. Over 50 elementary, middle and high school teachers completed the two courses and took information back to their classrooms.
- 2000 Student participation in Emergency Department Community Art Show.
- 2001 Partnership launched Science in a Box: and outreach project that took identified science lessons to various elementary and middle schools. The material was taught by SRI student scholars and faculty.
- 2001 Presentation on Science in a Box project at the National Science Teachers Association annual meeting in St. Louis, MO.
- 2001 Graduation of the first three students from the MOA program.
- 2002 Science Day initiated.
- 2002 Smart Business Network and Medical Mutual honored the Cleveland Clinic with the Pillar Award for Community Service, recognizing the Clinic’s partnership with John Hay High School as an outstanding contribution that goes well beyond the minimum expectations of community service.
- 2003 Funding for student research received from Philips and Fifth/Third Bank.
- 2004 Kristian Walker included as research author on Senior Research project publication.
- 2004 Membership on Cleveland Municipal Schools Planning Team for John Hay High School.
- 2005 Membership on Cleveland Municipal Schools Health Education Council.
