"The students, staff and patients have worked very well together. Our students have gained a greater maturity leaving the classroom and entering the workplace. The patients have enjoyed meeting the students and have felt very relaxed during their hand and arm massage. We look forward to adding additional services such as facials in the near future."
Debbie Cegelka
Senior Instructor, Brush High School
"Our patients have really enjoyed the hand massages by the students! The patients tell us that the extra touch and attention is wonderful and they just love it! The students have been quite polite and respectful within the department. They stay in the background until we know that a patient has requested the service and then eagerly meet the patient and start the massage! It has been a pleasure working with their instructor, Debra, and we look forward to the program's continuation, and perhaps expansion, in the autumn!"

"The Beyond the Chair program is proving to be an excellent way to give life to classroom-based theory by allowing each participating student to develop their skills in a way not possible with a book and chalkboard. Because they have a real and responsive client to interact with, they are not only perfecting their hand massage techniques, they are also mastering communication skills. Real clients always have questions and the students have proven to be quite adapt at putting the patients at ease and educating them on maintenance and follow-up skin care the patients can do on their own. This hands-on program has exposed the students to a potential nontraditional employment setting and has reinforced positive attitudes and appropriate work habits that get lost amidst a classroom of peers. Beyond the Chair is a successful teaching tool and a great service to our Cleveland Clinic Family Health Center patients.”
