Ambassadors for Learning

Ambassadors for Learning is an innovative mentorship program that connects Cleveland Clinic employees, their relatives, physicians, retirees, or proactive members of the community with volunteer opportunities at more than 700 public and private schools throughout the region. Through the program, volunteer can tailor their roles to their professional and personal skills, providing valuable real-world learning to students throughout grades K-12, facilitating their transition into post-secondary education.

Why be a mentor?

A mentor is more than just a counselor and a guide. In addition to giving something back to the community that taught you so much, mentoring is the unique opportunity to pass on one?s knowledge and experiences, so progress and innovation are constant. Above all, mentoring allows you to inspire a younger generation while you, yourself are inspired to continue doing better.

Who can be a mentor?

Mentors can volunteer as individuals, or as part of a team, department or division. You can be an individual mentor if you are:

  • A current employee (for at least 12 months) of Cleveland Clinic or a Cleveland Clinic Community Hospital
  • Cleveland Clinic or a Cleveland Clinic Community Hospital Physician (includes Fellows, Medical Students, Residents, Researchers and Staff)
  • Related to an employee of Cleveland Clinic or a Cleveland Clinic Community Hospital
  • A Retired employee of Cleveland Clinic or a Cleveland Clinic Community Hospital
  • A community individual interested in mentoring

Teams of employees also may volunteer to be mentors. You can be team mentors if you are:

  • Cleveland Clinic or a Cleveland Clinic Community Hospital Division
  • Cleveland Clinic or a Cleveland Clinic Community Hospital Department
  • A group of Cleveland Clinic or a Cleveland Clinic Community Hospital employees

What do I do as a mentor?

Volunteers can choose to participate in a variety of roles. Here are some ideas:

  • Academic Coach
  • Career Coach
  • Motivational Coach
  • Life Skills Coach
  • Sports Coach
  • Classroom Co-Teacher/Curriculum Facilitator
  • Special Needs Student Mentor
  • E-Ambassador (e-mail mentor)
  • Nutrition and Wellness/Fitness Mentor
  • Leadership Mentor

NOTE: Since we work with minors, all applicants are subject to a background check. We require that applicants be "in good standing" with the Cleveland Clinic. The Office of Civic Education Initiatives looks at "good standing" as an employee or a retiree having never received ANY corrective action and this information will be verified by the employee's supervisor and/or Human Resources.
