2008 Celebration of Life at the Cleveland Zoo
June 18, 2008
A Bornean Orangutan swings from branch to branch while giving laughing onlookers a knowing smile. A Brazilian Ocelot seems to be dancing gracefully as he walks past the guests. To RainForest visitors, the animals appear to celebrate their lives every day. On the evening of June 18th, the RainForest was a symbolic venue for the Celebration of Life event, which was attended by past and current patients of the Taussig Cancer Institute, numerous 4th Angels and their guests.
Sponsored by The Scott Hamilton CARES Initiative, the annual event recognizes that another full year has passed for the patients, the survivors, and their guests. While this was the 8th year that the event was held, it was the first year in which it was held at the Cleveland Zoo’s RainForest.
A record high of more than 400 people attended the night’s event. CARES initiative founder Scott Hamilton and special guests Lynn and Rick Reynolds gave moving accounts of their own experiences dealing with cancer and how it affected their lives and the lives of those around them. Rick is a colon cancer survivor who was mentored by a 4th Angel when he was going through treatment.
All in attendance left with their stomachs filled with delicious appetizers and deserts and their hearts and souls filled with hope and a loving sense of community.
