An Evening with Scott Hamilton & Friends on Ice
The fourth annual “An Evening with Scott Hamilton & Friends” on November 22, 2003 brought 5,000 figure skating enthusiasts to Cleveland’s Gund Arena to celebrate life, survivorship and support for the Scott Hamilton CARES Initiative.
The star-studded evening began with performances on ice by Scott Hamilton and an impressive assortment of Olympic and World champions, including Paul Wylie, Sasha Cohen, Rosalynn Sumners, Caryn Kadavy, Parker Pennington, Pairs champions Isabell Brasseur and Lloyd Eisler, and Katie Orscher and Garrett Lucash, Silvia Fontana, and Ryan Jahnke. Musical performances by the “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin and recording artist and Emmy-nominated actor Ron Raines completed the entertainment.
Continuing the celebration of life and the theme of moving ahead, Scott and his wife, Tracie, provided the grand finale by introducing their two-month-old son, Aidan, to roars of support from the audience. Following the performance, the upbeat mood of the evening continued at the Gala benefit at the Renaissance Hotel. Nearly 1,100 people – a record attendance – filled the Grand Ballroom to enjoy a five-star dinner and dancing to live music. Civic leader and philanthropist Maria Miller chaired the benefit.
There was even more reason to celebrate when the final tally for the event was completed – “An Evening with Scott Hamilton & Friends” raised $1.1 million for the research and patient programs of the Taussig Cancer Center.
In Tribute to a Special Lady
An empty chair placed on the ice paid silent tribute to Scott Hamilton’s long-time friend, supporter and mentor, the late Helen McLoraine, during one special skating number. Scott skated a moving, heartfelt solo to “Only One Life,” creating a uniquely appropriate farewell to a special woman who loved figure skating and generously supported the CARES Initiative.
