Glossary of Cancer Terms



A raised growth on the surface of the skin or other organ.

Watchful waiting

The person’s condition is closely monitored, but treatment does not begin until symptoms appear or change. Also called observation.

Whipple procedure

A surgical procedure used to treat localized pancreas cancer. The surgeon removes the head of the pancreas, the duodenum, a portion of the stomach and other nearby tissues.

White blood cells (WBC) (Leukocytes)

The blood cells that fight infection. This is part of a complete blood count (CBC) the normal range for white blood cells in an adult is 4.0-11.0 K/uL. (ranges may vary from laboratory to laboratory).

Wilm’s Tumor (Nephroblastoma)

The most common kidney cancer in children.
