The American Center for Reproductive Medicine at Cleveland Clinic offers a unique and exciting summer internship opportunity for highly motivated, academically oriented medical or undergraduate students interested in a career in medicine.

The center provides an excellent environment to learn the art of scientific writing in medicine. This unsurpassed experience gives participants the opportunity to:

  • Immerse themselves in a state-of-the-art research environment
  • Be mentored by renowned researchers at a world-class medical institution
  • Develop a strong foundation for pursuing a career in academic medicine

The program's goal is to encourage students to consider a career in medicine, whether in reproductive medicine or any other specialty of their choosing. To this end, we have designed an exceptional summer internship program to provide students a wide range of experiences.

During this 4-week program, participants will:

  • Work alongside reproductive scientists and clinicians in learning about basic laboratory techniques in a real laboratory environment.
    Some of the laboratory techniques learned by the Summer Interns of 2019 included:
    1. Measuring sperm concentration and motility in semen samples for semen analysis
    2. Demonstration of leukocytospermia for cases of infection
    3. Evaluation of sperm vitality by eosin-nigrosin and hypoosmotic swelling test to check for sperm membrane integrity
    4. Evaluation of sperm morphology according to World Health Organization 5th edition guidelines
    5. Demonstration of sperm preparation techniques for intrauterine insemination
    6. Demonstration of sperm cryopreservation for long term storage of semen samples for fertility preservation
    7. Demonstration of sperm DNA fragmentation by TUNEL assay
  • Interact with male infertility specialists and urologists.
  • Participate in daily didactics, research meetings, and group discussions.

Students will develop a strong understanding of how reproductive research is conducted. Participants will also learn how to:

  • Record laboratory results and conduct preliminary statistical analysis
  • Present results of laboratory training in departmental meetings
  • Prepare and present PowerPoint talks
  • Hone their public speaking skills

Some of the writing projects offered to the 2019 Summer Interns include:

  1. The role of infections and leukocytes in male infertility
  2. Are antioxidants a viable treatment option for male infertility?
  3. Diagnostic value of routine semen analysis in clinical andrology
  4. Diagnostic value of advanced semen analysis in evaluation of male infertility
  5. Evaluation of seminal oxidation-reduction potential in male infertility
  6. Sperm selection strategies and their impact on ART outcomes

Both local (US nationals) and foreign (international) applicants are welcome to apply.

How to apply:

Our selection procedure for summer internship positions is highly competitive. Twelve students were selected to participate in our program in the summer of 2019. Interested applicants should submit the following:

  • Recent curriculum vitae/resume
  • At least two recent letters of recommendation from advisors, teachers, or persons who have a firsthand knowledge of the candidate. The following is not acceptable: LORs sent as an e-mail and not printed on official letterhead, not carrying a signature, letters written more than 6-8 weeks before the date of submission. What is acceptable: LORs submitted via e-mail as scanned files either directly by the referee or a candidate. Please see the application page for further guidelines.
  • Address and telephone number for a personal interview
  • A 500-word personal statement
  • Proof of medical insurance
  • A letter stating that the participant has the necessary funding to support him/herself for the 4-week program (the internship is not funded and no financial support is available). This letter could be written by the candidate.
  • An application processing fee of USD $150.00 in the form of a money order or certified bank check only - payable to "2019 Internship in Reproductive Medicine". This fee is non-refundable.
  • A non-refundable course fee of USD $4,500.00 will be required from candidates accepted for the internship. This fee may be submitted as a money order or certified bank check (no personal checks) made payable to "2019 Internship in Reproductive Medicine". Overseas candidates should review the course fee by clicking here.

Grading:

Daily attendance will be taken. Points will be deducted from your participation grade for unexcused absences or arriving significantly late.

The grade scale is: 90-100% A
80-89% B
70-79% C
60-69% D
59% and below: F

Continuous assessment will be used to evaluate the different core competencies of the Internship. The Mentors will assess these components using specific scoring tools and score sheets on a continuous basis throughout the 4 weeks.

Determination of the class participation/preparation grade will be based on the judgment of the effort the student puts into the course, and his/her growth in understanding (i.e. learning). Evaluation is based on attendance, preparation for class, participation in class, and the quality, creativity, consistency, and completeness of work. It is very unlikely that anyone who is chronically late (without a reasonable explanation), or has more than one unexcused absence, will receive an “A” grade. Attendance will be taken daily and points will be deducted for unexcused absences and late arrival. Documentation from a health care provider or The University Health Service, etc will be necessary to excuse absence.

The Laboratories
Research and Clinical Laboratories occupy over 5000 square feet of workspace with state-of-the-art instruments and facilities for advanced research in fertility preservation in patients with cancer, proteomics of male and female infertility and molecular markers of oxidative stress and DNA integrity.

Equipment and Instrumentation
Instruments available in our facility include: computer assisted semen analyzers, luminometer for oxidative stress measurements, Accuri BD C6 flow cytometer, equipment for western blot, culture room equipped with a sterile hood, several incubators, microscopes, and Narishige micromanipulator fitted on an inverted phase-contrast microscope, spectrophotometers, ELISA plate reader, centrifuges, liquid nitrogen storage tanks, programmable freezers, cold room, etc.

Core Laboratories
The laboratory has ready access to over a dozen highly-specialized core laboratories within the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute. These include: proteomics, metabolomics, genomics, molecular biotechnology, molecular screening, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, translational research, digital imaging and electron microscopy, etc. For more information on these core laboratories, please visit: http://www.lerner.ccf.org/services.

IT Equipment
Along with office supplies, the office space for Fellows is equipped with over 2 dozen computers with laser printers, scanners, copiers, and all the necessary software programs. All computers in the Center are connected to the Cleveland Clinic's intranet that provides direct access to most online journals related to the field of medicine, urology, reproductive medicine, andrology, oby-gyn, etc.

Teamwork
A large collection of scientific journals, electronic journals/books, and other databases are available through the resourceful Cleveland Clinic Alumni Library. Specialized Medical Librarians are ever willing to help in research and use of electronic databases. Statistical research support is readily available from a team of biostatisticians working in the Department of Quantitative Health Sciences (QHS). Services for the design and creation of medical illustration for publication purposes are provided by The Center for Medical Art and Photography (CMAP) Arts and Photo also aid in the preparation of research posters and lecture slides for presentations at national meetings.
