Wael Barsoum, MD
Cleveland Clinic

Dr. Wael Barsoum, MD, is the Chairman of Surgical Operations and Vice Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Cleveland Clinic.  He holds a joint appointment in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and is involved in the training of future physicians as the Director of Research and Education for the Orthopaedic Adult Reconstructive Surgery Section and Associate Professor of Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine.  In addition to these leadership and training roles, Dr. Barsoum has a full clinical practice as a staff Orthopaedic Surgeon.  He specializes in adult reconstructive surgery, including hip and knee reconstruction and replacement, hip and knee arthroscopy, and revision hip and knee replacement.  He obtained his MD from The Ohio State University, followed by Orthopaedic Surgery residency training at Cleveland Clinic and a fellowship in Adult Reconstructive Surgery at the New England Baptist Hospital.  He is a fellow of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the American Orthopaedic Association.  Additionally, Dr. Barsoum is an avid researcher and innovator.  He is the principal investigator for a variety of clinical, basic science, and translational studies and has over 30 active or pending patents.  Dr. Barsoum has received Cleveland Clinic Innovation’s Award 6 times – the most recent being the prestigious 2011 Sones Award for Innovation, presented in 2012.
